Agribusiness

Tuesday, October 12, 2010 7:30 AM to 9:00 AM
Farm succession planning is an increasingly important issue to American Agriculture. About 53% of U.S. framers are over 55 and 33% are over 65 years old. Within the next decade we will see a massive shift in farm ownership. But efforts are underway to make this as smooth a process as possible. Since 1987, the Ohio Employee Ownership Center at Kent State university has helped companies trasition into employee-owned business or ESOPs (Employer Stock Ownership Plans). In 1997 this effort was expanded to include assisting businesses with all types of succession plans. In 2008 plans were made to add farm succession planning to the array of services and this has resulted in a series of introductory workshops being conducted throughout the state. Roy Messing was raised on a dairy farm in Michigan, graduated from Michigan State, and went on to spend over twenty years in commercial banking, with over ten years of that experience in agricultural lending. He holds an MBA from University of Dayton and was the CFO of a Northeast Ohio plastic extrusion company. We hope you will join us as Roy describes the efforts that are being made to deal with this important issue that will shape the future of agriculture in the U.S.
